The gallery is in the Palazzo Doria Pamphili, owned and still occupied by the Doria Pamphili family. The palace dates from 1435, though Valvassori’s facade on the Via del Corso is early 18th- century. A series of splendidly decorated state rooms, including a spectacular Hall of Mirrors, is open to the public. Much of the collection was formed by Camillo Pamphili, nephew of Pope Innocent X whose portrait by Velazquez is here.
The palace houses the contents of the Palazzo Pamphili (in Piazza Navona), which came to the Dorias through marriage. You can see Raphael’s Doppio Ritratto (Double Portrait), important works by Bronzino, Caravaggio, Pietro da Cortona, Claude, Titian, Longhi and Bernini, and an excellent collection of ancient Roman marbles, baroque furniture and Gobelin tapestries.
