History of Bioparco di Roma

Bioparco di Roma, established in 1911, is one of the oldest zoos in Europe. Originally designed by renowned architect Carl Hagenbeck, the zoo’s vision was to create an immersive experience that would allow visitors to observe animals in their natural habitats. Over the years, the zoo has undergone significant transformations, evolving into a modern and sustainable institution committed to animal welfare, education, and conservation.

Mammals of the African Savannah

Opening Hours

Bioparco di Roma is open daily, except on Christmas Day. The zoo’s opening hours are as follows:

• January to March: 9:30 am – 5:00 pm
• April to September: 9:30 am – 6:00 pm
• October: 9:30 am – 5:00 pm
• November to December: 9:30 am – 4:00 pm

Last admission is one hour before closing time.

Getting There

Bioparco di Roma is located in Villa Borghese, a large public park in the heart of Rome. The zoo is easily accessible by public transportation:

• Bus: The 3, 52, 53, 63, 86, 88, 92, 95, 116, 217, 231, 360, 490, 491, and 495 lines all stop near the zoo.
• Tram: Line 19 stops at Piazza del Popolo, a 10-minute walk from the zoo’s entrance.
• Metro: Line A (Spagna or Flaminio stations) is a 15-minute walk from the zoo.
