About Circus Maximus
The Circus Maximus was built by Tarquinius Priscus and later enlarged and reconstructed by Julius Caesar. It was used for all kinds of spectacles and held as many as 400.000 spectators.
The obelisks which now stand in Piazza del Popolo and in Piazza San Giovanni in Laterano came from there. It was in the Circus Maximus, rather than in the Colosseum, that the Romans witnessed the torments of the Christians who were the victims of many persecutions. The names of many emperors are linked with these appalling events, which gave them unenviable fame.
Among the persecutions most notorious for the number of victims and for their cruelty, are those of Nero in 64 A.D., Domitian, Trajan, Septimius Severus, Decius, Valerian, and Diocletian. The last was known as the “great persecution”.
