The History of Gladiator Schools

Gladiator schools, or ludi, originated in ancient Rome around the 3rd century BC. The first gladiator schools were humble establishments, but as the games gained popularity, more advanced and specialized schools began to emerge.

The Ludus Magnus, located in the heart of Rome, was the most famous of all gladiator schools. Built by Emperor Domitian in the 1st century AD, it housed around 2.000 gladiators and was directly connected to the Colosseum by an underground tunnel.
