Viewing the absolute perfection of the triumphal vestibule to St Peter’s is a unique experience. Taking a liberty which was amazing at the time, Bernini substituted the curve for the right angle considered essential in the construction of the traditional atrium or forecourt.
Surrounded by 140 statues of saints, St Peter’s Square is both a symbol of the Church extending its arms to welcome pilgrims as well as a major expression of Baroque art. Bernini, commissioned by Alexander VII ( 1655-1667), has created a trapezoidal space vast enough to accommodate crowds of pilgrims and allowing each to catch sight of the pontiff when he appears on the balcony of St Peter’s.
With a view to the pageantry of liturgical processions, Bernini also created a quadruple colonnade. Last, and of course not least, the square was designed to set off St Peter’s by the use of optical illusions which make the Basilica look higher than it is.
