Explore the world of early 20th-century Italian Expressionism, the Roman School, and contemporary Italian art at the stunning Palazzo Merulana.
The Rich History of Palazzo Merulana
Located on the picturesque Esquilino Hill, near the iconic Colosseum and the majestic Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, Palazzo Merulana is a beautifully restored former Department of Health building. The sunlit, spacious museum was lovingly renovated by Elena and Claudio Cerasi, a Roman couple who sought to share their passion for art with the public. This exquisite setting is now home to an impressive collection of Italian Expressionist and contemporary art.
The Collection: A Showcase of Italian Art
At Palazzo Merulana, visitors can marvel at nearly 100 exceptional pieces by renowned artists such as Giorgio de Chirico, Renato Guttuso, Felice Casorati, Gino Severini, and Duilio Cambellotti. The museum spans four captivating floors, each filled with a diverse range of artwork, including sculptures, paintings, and other works by celebrated figures like Antonietta Raphael, Lucio Fontana, Giacomo Balla, and Renato Donghi.
In the center of the museum, don’t miss Jan Fabre’s intriguing piece, “Director of the Stars,” which adds a contemporary touch to the collection.
