The Mamertine Prison was later consecrated as San Pietro in Carcere and now lies beneath the 16th-century church of San Giuseppe dei Falegnami (enter via the steps in the church porch). St Peter was held here by Nero before his crucifixion in AD 67: the lower cell, the Tullianum, contains the column to which he was secured. This cell was the scene of executions, and corpses were disposed of through the hole in the floor which led to the Cloaca Maxima sewer.
