The present ruins are a pale image of the magnificent marble-faced stadium erected on marshy ground, originally with a circumference of about a third of a mile. The building was begun by the Emperor Vespasian and finished by his son, Titus, in 80 AD. The arena could accommodate more than 50,000 spectators. In the event of too much rain or sun, an awning could be spread over the top of the arena.
The opening ceremony lasted for three months and the programme featured fights between wild animals and combats between pairs or groups of gladiators. In the arena it is possible to see the remains of the underground passages and storage places where the animals and slaves were kept. Some Christians suffered martyrdom here.
The building was abandoned and plundered for many centuries until it was declared a sacred place in the eighteenth century. On the right of the entrance to the Colosseum stands the triumphal arch commemorating the victories of Constantine. The Pope usually leads the Way of the Cross in the Colosseum on the evening of Good Friday.
